Padawan No More, A Master I Am

Whether you think you can, or you think you can’t, chances are you’re probably right.

I graduated in 2015 with my Bachelor’s degree in Public Relations while triple-minoring in sports business, advertising and nonprofit administration. Graduate school had crossed my mind many times as an undergraduate, but I thought I wouldn’t be able to do it and that it held no value for me – I was wrong.

As of July 27, 2015, “More than 16 million people in the US – about 8 percent of the population – now have a master’s, a 43 percent increase since Continue reading

To go to College? Or to get a watch?

April 24th is upon us.

With Apple being one of the, if not the, leading innovators in expanding smart technology, everyone is in a new “Apple-craze” due to the new release of the Apple watch.

This new watch comes in 20 different models with prices ranging from $400 upwards to $17k. To me, this seems excessive because I am college student and I have loans that far exceed the price for this single watch. So, the question becomes, will people choose to attend college to pursue their Bachelor’s degree? Or will they buckle and use their educational funding ability towards this heinously expensive accessory?

I believe that watches are useful pieces of technology, and they are even sometimes meant to be accessories with bright colors, prints, and a flashy finish. However, spending approximately $17k (before adding the Apple care plan for an additional $1,500) for an accessory seems a bit ridiculous.

Now, I am a new Macbook owner and I love my new baby…But, I also own a watch that’s from Walmart that I spent $13 on after tax.

It just goes to show that we live in an age where something you can slap on your wrist stacks up almost dollar for dollar against a college education.

As Ellen Degeneres tweeted on September 9, 2014: “So excited for the Apple Watch. For centuries, we’ve checked the time by looking at our phones. Having it on your wrist? Genius. #AppleLive”. With 18,549 retweets at 17,958 favorites, I couldn’t have strongly agreed with a more sarcastic statement about the irony and the lack of need for this new Apple product.

With Apple smartphones, and fitbits, this new watch seems to be just a combination of the two. Granted, I appreciate the innovative technology advancements, and I like seeing Apple hard at work progressing with new products. But if I were given the option between going to college, or getting this new watch, I would choose college hands down 100% of the time.
